Barnes-Jewish Hospital

The Plaza West Tower at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, part of BJC HealthCare’s 660,000-square-foot Campus Renewal expansion in St. Louis, demonstrates how Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) facade panels can be integrated into unitized curtain wall systems to improve construction efficiency and facade performance. Envel fabricated 79,000 square feet of UHPC panels in a custom Tan 7 finish, incorporating Textura 2, Wide Ribbed, and Horizontal Ribbed textures to create depth, shadow, and architectural rhythm across the tower’s elevation.

Nearly 9,000 prefabricated panels were manufactured and shipped to our partner, FacadeTek, before being delivered to Ventana for installation, streamlining the assembly of the high-performance facade system. The 16-story tower, now a prominent addition to the St. Louis skyline, houses 280 private inpatient rooms, advanced imaging and procedural suites, and critical support spaces serving Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and Washington University School of Medicine.

The project highlights how prefabricated UHPC rainscreen panels combined with unitized curtain wall construction can support complex healthcare environments while delivering durable, visually expressive architectural facades.
