ASCE Highlights Engineering Behind the Obama Presidential Center Speech Screen

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) recently featured the engineering story behind the speech screen at the Obama Presidential Center, highlighting the collaboration between architects, engineers, fabricators, and contractors required to transform President Obama’s words into a permanent architectural element.

Designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, the speech screen consists of 39 custom Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) panels containing 458 cast letters. Manufactured by Envel, the monumental installation forms one of the Center’s most recognizable architectural features and demonstrates how advanced materials, structural engineering, and precision fabrication can work together to realize an ambitious architectural vision.

The article explores the complex engineering challenges addressed by TYLin, including the development of innovative structural solutions to support the monumental letter panels while preserving the design’s visual intent. It also examines the critical role UHPC played in achieving the precision, durability, and design flexibility required for the project.
